Delivery note and VAT invoice in the UK

  1. A delivery note proves that goods were sent or received. It is not a VAT invoice. To reclaim input VAT you normally need a valid VAT invoice.
  2. A full VAT invoice shows the supplier's name, address and VAT number, the date, a unique number, the customer, a description, the quantity, the rate, the VAT rate and amount, and the total.
  3. A simplified invoice can be used when the total including VAT is £250 or less (VAT Notice 700/21).
  4. If an invoice is missing details, ask the supplier for a corrected one before you claim the VAT back.
  5. Keep business records for VAT, including delivery notes, for at least 6 years.
