Diesel transit loss calculator
Find the loss on a tanker trip in litres and rupees, and how much of it is above your allowed limit.
Works the same for petrol, kerosene, lubricants, edible oil or any liquid. Nothing you type is stored or sent.
How transit loss is calculated
- Transit loss = loaded - delivered. 12,000 L - 11,952 L = 48 L.
- Loss % = loss / loaded × 100. 48 / 12,000 × 100 = 0.40 %.
- Allowed loss = loaded × allowed %. 12,000 × 0.25 % = 30 L.
- Excess loss = loss - allowed. 48 - 30 = 18 L. At ₹ 90 a litre that is ₹ 1,620 to recover.
Why diesel goes missing on the road
Temperature
Fuel expands when warm and shrinks when cool. Hot fuel loaded at noon and dipped cold at night shows fewer litres without any real loss.
Meter and dip errors
A depot meter and a customer's dip rod rarely agree to the litre. Check both are calibrated.
Evaporation and leaks
Small for diesel, more for petrol. Worn valves and seals add up over many trips.
Theft (pilferage)
Repeated over-limit losses on the same route, tanker or driver are the usual sign.
Stop calculating by hand
In Bizznify for diesel suppliers, this calculation runs on every delivery. The allowed loss is set per product or per customer, normal loss is booked to your accounts, and any excess opens a shortage case with its value, so you can see which routes, tankers and drivers lose the most.
Questions, answered.
What is transit loss?
Transit loss is the difference between the quantity loaded into a tanker and the quantity delivered. Some loss is normal (evaporation, temperature, meter difference); a bigger loss points to a leak, a wrong reading or theft.
How do I calculate transit loss percentage?
Transit loss % = (loaded - delivered) / loaded x 100. Example: 12,000 L loaded, 11,952 L delivered = 48 L loss = 0.40 %.
What is an allowed transit loss?
It is the loss you accept as normal, agreed with your customer or transporter, as a % of the loaded quantity. Only the loss above this limit is usually recovered.
Why does temperature change the quantity?
Diesel and petrol expand when warm and shrink when cool. Fuel loaded hot and delivered in cool weather can show fewer litres without any real loss. Measure at the same temperature, or by weight, when the numbers matter.
